Evaluating Resources

The CRAAP test is a popular method used to evaluate the credibility and reliability of information sources. It was developed by librarians at California State University, Chico, in 2004. The acronym CRAAP stands for:

  • Currency: Is the information up-to-date?
  • Relevance: Does the information relate to your research needs?
  • Authority: Who is the author or publisher? Are they reputable?
  • Accuracy: Is the information supported by evidence? Is it free from errors?
  • Purpose: Why was the information created? Is it to inform, teach, sell, entertain, or persuade?

This test helps researchers and students determine if their sources are trustworthy and suitable for their needs
